This quote comes from an awesome book Think Like a Monkwritten by one smart guy – Jay Sheti. Warning, it’s a brain twister.
“I am not what I think I am. I am not what you think I am. I am what I think you think I am.”
Let that settle in for a moment.
Here is one more from Sheti: “Our identity is wrapped up in what others think of us—or, more accurately, what we think others think of us.”
What this boils down to is that we spend so much time and energy thinking about what others think of us, or even more draining, thinking about why we think they think about us.
The crazy thing about this is how could we ever really know what they are genuinely thinking simply by thinking about this? We can’t. All that comes from that time-consuming and exhausting process is creating stories in our minds, which usually boil down to crazy (primarily untrue) assumptions.
So, what if we let go of that process and other people’s thoughts and expectations and just focused all that energy on living out our own core values?
I don’t know about you, but that feels like a far better way to spend my time.
If you aren’t sure what your core values are (or how to create them for yourself), stay tuned. I will be sharing more about that topic soon.
Life is good. – Jeff
